Two Clarksdale Police Department officers have been dealing with serious health problems for several months.
Assistant police chief Robbie Linley has been out of work due to his issues. Capt. Delarian Norsworthy’s 5-year-old son, Delarian Norsworthy Jr., is also sick.
The CPD has organized a benefit basketball game at the Coahoma County Expo Center for Thursday where all proceeds will be donated to the Norsworthy and Linley families for whatever they need.
“We wanted to do things collectively as a group just to benefit, let them know we’re thinking about them and doing something to assist them in their time of need,” Cpl. Kendrick Walker said.
A basketball game of local athletes will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, while the main event will be a matchup between the CPD and Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office at 7 p.m.
CCC men’s basketball coach the Rev. Micheal Stringer and assistant coach the Rev. Luster C. Tyler II will be officiating the games.
“It’s just something that came up,” Walker said. “Our shift – Della Monix, Ben Wade, Eric Bilbro, Charles Hampton – all of us came together and thought this would be a good way to raise money and also to show the community we care for each other.
“We just want to give thanks out to the sheriff’s department, Charles Jones, for being a willing participant. We’ve got several other people in the community that assisted in this program.”
Walker also expressed thanks to the Coahoma County Youth Outreach program for assisting with the event and allowing the police department to use the facility. There will be a raffle and music will play. Norsworthy’s mother, Crystal Landfair, is expected to be present.
“We’d just like to show the community we’re here to support each other and we just want to come through and have a good time, show there is no hostility toward each organization,” Walker said.
Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 10 and younger.
