Allegations of an assault have been addressed by Coahoma Community College after the incident became known to the college and authorities earlier this week.
The college is describing the incident as bullying and intimidation and has turned the investigation over to the college’s Department of Safety. Coahoma County Sheriff Charles Jones said Friday afternoon he is aware of the incident, but no formal charges have been filed at this time.
According to a statement released by the college, a student reported the incident about midnight Oct. 2.
“A student reported an incident of bullying and intimidation by another student in a residence hall located on the campus of Coahoma Community College,” the statement reads. “Upon receiving the student’s report, the Coahoma Community College Department of Safety gathered initial details and began a full investigation.
“Subsequently, the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office was contacted, who is now the lead agency in this investigation,” the statement said. “The suspect has since been detained and released. CCC is working with the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a thorough investigation.”
The Clarksdale Press Register contacted the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office public information officer about the incident on Wednesday seeking details and was told a formal statement would be forthcoming.
Sheriff Jones said Friday his department has been contacted and no one has stepped forward to file charges.
“Coahoma Community College takes all allegations of bullying, intimidation, assault, harassment and violence very seriously,” the college said in their statement. “Any individual that is found guilty of such acts will be subject to disciplinary action.”
“We do not have any update regarding any charges or sanctions,” the college went on to say. “It is the policy of Coahoma Community College to not comment on individual student cases, as disciplinary records are considered confidential under federal student privacy laws.”
The college encourages the community to report instances of bullying or misconduct to the CCC Department of Safety (662-645-1837) and they can do so anonymously.
