Clarksdale’s fire chief and other city officials believe lightning could have been to blame for a fire at the city landfill Sunday that spread to several acres and burned throughout the night.
Fire Chief Rocky Nabors said Monday that the fire started between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Sunday at the landfill. One truck from the city assisted as three fire engines from the county fire department were dispatched.
Nabors said they were able to use bulldozers to move dirt and surround the fire as it burned throughout the night and was still smoldering Monday. He estimated the fire covered three or four acres.
“It was basically like a big bonfire,” Nabors said.
There were no injuries reported.
Also, Nabors said city firefighters were called out recently to extinguish a fire at Cheap Charlies, located on Desoto Avenue. He said the city has made at least four runs to the business in the last two years with two of those fires being “pretty good-sized” fires.
He said the Clarksdale Police Department has investigated the fires in the past, but no arrests have been made.
