Shots fired on State Street Monday night shattered a window at a local restaurant and the broken glass injured a patron.
Clarksdale police are looking for information on shots apparently fired from a passing vehicle that hit the front window of McDonald’s about 8:45 p.m. last night. Police are asking the public to please call them with information about this incident.
“At this time we don’t believe McDonalds or anyone at McDonalds was the intended target,” said Robbie Linley, Clarksdale assistant police chief. “We don’t have a motive at this time. A witness did say the shots came from a passing car on State Street.
“No one was struck by the bullets, but a patron was injured slightly by the broken glass,” said Linley. “It appears to be senseless and we are taking this very seriously and urging the public to call us anonymously.”
Windows at the restaurant were being repaired this morning. Police descended on the scene in force and quickly fanned out checking out leads.
Linley said investigators were on the scene recovering evidence to try and determine the caliber of the bullet fired. Lindley said more than one shot hit the building.
With the approach of New Years, Linley reminded the public that shooting inside the city limits is illegal and dangerous.
“First, we have a law – an ordinance – making it a crime to fire a gun inside the city limits and you can be arrested for that,” said Linley. “Secondly, every year we have people who go outside on New Year’s Eve and shoot in the air. Those bullets come down somewhere, it’s dangerous and people can be seriously hurt.”
Linley urged the community to report shots fired anytime they hear them in Clarksdale. Police can be reached at 662-621-8151 or simply by calling 911.
