A 33-year-old Clarksdale man will serve three years in prison after he pled guilty to a charge of burglary of a Clarksdale home over two years ago.
Jerel Cotton, whose last known residence was 414 Oakhurst St., was sentenced Aug. 8 by Circuit Court Judge Albert Smith. In addition to three years in the state prison system, Cotton will be placed on five years probation once he’s released from prison.
Cotton was indicted along with Corderius Thomas by a Coahoma County grand jury on June 1, 2017, as they were accused of breaking into a home on Friars Point Road on June 2, 2016.
In other action during the July court session:
n Kimberly Turner was found not guilty by a jury during a two-day trial that ended on Tuesday, Aug. 14. Turner had been indicted on a charge of DUI death by a Coahoma County grand jury on Dec. 7, 2016.
The indictment claimed that on Sept. 20, 2015, Turner was under the influence when the car she was driving on Highway 61 struck the rear of a vehicle driven by Jacqueline Brown. The car driven by Brown would leave the roadway and overturn, killing Brown.
n Howard Harris, 25, of 341 Monroe St. in Clarksdale, was sentenced to a year in prison by Circuit Court Judge Charles Webster on Aug. 13 after he pled guilty to the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In addition to the year in prison, Harris will also have to serve four years’ probation.
Harris had been indicted May 30 by a Coahoma County grand jury after he was arrested for having a 9 mm handgun in his possession on Jan. 19. Harris had previously been convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery and attempted robbery in Desoto County.
The next term of court in Coahoma County will be in November.
