Two Lee Academy basketball players were recognized for their achievements this past season and were named to the 2019-20 All-MAIS Class 3A team.
Senior guard and forward Brett Wilson was named to the team with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks per game. He played in the All-Star Game, earned Class 3A North State All-Tournament Honors and was the Region 1-3A MVP. He finished his career with 1,118 points, 609 rebounds, 303 steals, 208 blocks and 206 assists. The Colts advanced to the state tournament.
Wilson, who also played in the All-Star football game, appreciated all of the honors his senior year.
“It feels good,” he said. “I’ve worked hard a long time, done my best. It just feels nice to have some accomplishments.”
The All-State award was a surprise for Wilson.
“I didn’t really know about the All-State award,” he said. “I won that in football, too. It was nice to win in both sports.”
Junior point guard Emily Moser, who also earned all district honors, earned a spot on the team with 19 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds per game. The Fillies advanced to the North state tournament.
“I didn’t really end the season the way I wanted to,” Moser said. “I sprained my ankle in the first game of the district tournament, so I was out the rest of the season. It’s just really a big honor to realize how much my teammates and coaches meant to me.”
Eight athletes apiece were named to the boys and girls teams.
Both Lee Academy honorees reflected on their careers and discussed potential future plans.
“I think I’m going to try to walk on to Ole Miss,” said Wilson, who holds a 3.5 GPA and a class rank of 15. “I know their coaches kind of and Coach P (Lee coach Michael Peckham) knows their coaches.”
Wilson’s father, Bill Wilson, who also went to Lee Academy, got him into sports.
“I’ve always wanted to play sports,” Wilson said. “My dad has helped me my whole life since I was little playing sports.”
Bill Wilson was a point and shooting guard in basketball.
“Their team was real good in basketball,” Wilson said.
Both Brett and Bill Wilson played quarterback in football. Brett went on to play quarterback in high school and was the starter last season as the Colts advanced to the states semifinals. Bill Wilson stopped playing football before high school and focused on basketball.
While Moser has one more year at Lee Academy, she, too, has high aspirations to play basketball at the college level.
“I’m thinking about getting my name out there to coaches, but I haven’t really decided yet,” Moser said.
Moser was recognized for her achievements during the season.
“At the very beginning, I got Impact Sports Player of the Week,” she said. “It’s just another award coaches vote on and select.”
Moser scored 27 points in a Fillies win at home during that week. She hopes to continue her success next season.
“I just want to lead my team and set a good example for all of my teammates and, hopefully, we’ll get to make to the state and win the championship,” she said.
Wilson and Moser have both been members of the track and field team through the years, but the season has not taken place thanks to COVID-19.
Wilson is a reigning State 3A high jump champion and also competes in the long jump, 4x100-meter relay, 4x200-meter relay, 4x-400-meter relay and the 300-meter hurdles. He is still managing to stay in shape.
“I’ve been in the gym (at Lee Academy) working out and lifting weights and stuff,” he said.
Moser competes in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, triple jump, long jump, 400-meter relay, 800-meter relay and 1600-meter relay on the track and field team.
“I’ve been shooting in my driveway, running on the treadmill every day or just running down my street,” said Moser on how she is continuing to stay in shape.
Moser is also a center fielder and shortstop on the softball team.
