Lifelong Clarksdale resident, Richard Winston “Wimpy” Gilbert, 89, passed away on May 20, 2020, at N.W.R.M.C. He graduated from Clarksdale High School, Delta State College and the School of Banking at LSU. He was retired from United Southern Bank as a Senior Vice-President.
Wimpy served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and later achieved the rank of Captain in the Army National Guard. He was passionate about the outdoors, especially deer, turkey and duck hunting. He also loved to fish near his cabin on DeSoto Lake. He belonged to several service organizations including VFW and American Legion. Wimpy was also a stockholder in Bland Bayou Hunting Club. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and playing golf, scoring a hole-in-one at the age of 78. Above everything, Wimpy cherished his family and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and most recently his great-granddaughter.
Wimpy is pre-deceased by his parents, John Luther and Rena Glen Gilbert; his brothers Cliff Gilbert and Melville Gilbert; sisters Lutherene Roberts, Darlene Gilbert and Mavis Wilkins.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Pullen Gilbert; son, Richard Winston Gilbert, Jr. (DeAnn) of Madison; daughter, Lisa Gilbert Wigington of Batesville; Sisters, Gloria Law of Houston, Texas, and Naomi French of Columbus, Ga.; Grandchildren, Richard Winston “Rich” Gilbert, III (Samantha) and Parker Reed Gilbert both of Oxford, Dr. Anne Kristen Glaser (Jon) of Madison, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Wigington and Mary Michael Wigington both of Oxford; Great-granddaughter, Rosalie Jo Glaser of Madison.
Graveside services were 10 a.m.., Saturday, May 23, 2020 with interment in Oakridge Cemetery in Clarksdale. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale handled the arrangements.
