Samuel Hubert Ely, 84, of Raleigh, Mississippi, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at the Veterans Nursing Home in Collins, Mississippi. He was born Tuesday, July 27, 1937 in Greenwood, Mississippi.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022 from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Sylvarena, MS. Graveside Services will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery with burial to follow. Bro. Larry Dennis will officiate. Samuel Hubert “Sam” Ely served in the U.S. Army as Sergeant in the 13 Cavalry, 3rd Armored Division. He was a resident of Clarksdale, MS since 1961, moving to Raleigh in 2019. He served on the Vestry at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Clarksdale, MS. Sam was an avid hunter, fisherman and held memberships in Old River Wildlife and Ozark Island Hunting Clubs. He was a longtime amateur radio operator, holding the call sign N5DOK.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Shockley Ely and Lucy Emma Scott Ely, brothers, Robert McDonald Ely, Thomas Shockley Ely Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Sherry Jackson Ely; sons, Lee Wess Ely (Tonja), Samuel Martin Ely; grandchildren, Mabry Ely Dennis (Jamie), Lee Wess Ely III (Kaylan); great-grandchildren, Ely James Dennis, Easton Luke Dennis, Waylon Daniel Ely and Malia Jane Ely; sister, Rachel Ely Winter (George Wayne); sisters-in-law, Beverly Morris Ely, Martha Trimm Ely and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Shawn Houston, Tristan Houston, Casey Houston, Sammy Houston, and Sam Houston.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lee Ely III, Jamie Dennis, Chris Winter, Mack Ely and Michael Ely.
