To the Editor:
We are very upset at the criminal justice system in Clarksdale.
The case of the two men who are accused of killing our loved one, Myrtle Messenger, has not gone to trial and keeps getting continuances.
The district attorney is not keeping us informed of what is going on nor answering why the case keeps getting continued and why these two thugs have bond and are walking the streets while our loved one has passed away.
This case is almost four years old and has not been tried and we are seeking answers as to why.
Why won’t the police chief return our calls when we call and leave messages for her?
Why the district attorney return our call when we call and leave messages for her?
You can’t speak with the judge because it has been said that it would be bias and not on the record. Well, we only want to know why this case is taking so long to prosecute. That is why we keep calling.
Why, Mr. Mayor, won’t you answer your phone or return phone calls, even though you say have an open-door policy?
Why? Why? Why?
We are the victim’s family and we deserve to know what is going on with every aspect of the case.
We wasted a trip to Clarksdale a few weeks ago thinking there was going to be a trial, but just wasted gas and energy.
What does it take there in Clarksdale to get this case tried?
Why is everyone hiding and won’t return a phone call?
We have written the state’s Attorney General office, the FBI and other entities and are just waiting on a response.
Our family deserves closure and we just need this case to go to trial.
It is a clear-cut case, but if the district attorney and others are afraid to prosecute, then get someone else to prosecute it.
It should not take almost five years to get closure.
We will keep fighting for our family to get justice for our loved one, Myrtle Messenger.
If not, we will go to the TV news media and have them investigate why this case has not gone to trial after almost five years.
We are tired of waiting. We are tired of being lied to and keep getting put off.
We are an upset family that only wants justice.
