Drawing trees and clouds can be nice and pretty but producing a portrait takes inspiration and it has to look like that person.
The Coahoma County Art Class were charged with creating portraits of someone who has inspired them and the work of right at 100 students has gone up on the main hall at the High School on Lee Drive.
“We had to do our homework on the person and write an essay on why they inspired us,” said Adrianna Roberts, a sophomore who chose R&B singer Summer Walker as her subject. “She taught herself how to play guitar and her music speaks to me.”
Roberts used pastels to capture Walker and reflect her style of music.
Sophomore Tony Ingram chose Denzel Washington for his work.
“You see him all over Hollywood and he plays neat characters,” said Ingram. “He’s also a generous man and I found out he has given a lot of money to disabled people.”
Ingram also used pastel chalk to capture Washington. But he said his favorite medium is oil painting.
Both Roberts and Ingram hope to carry their art to the next level.
Jennifer Ruskey, art and English teacher at Coahoma High School, said she is always surprised at what her students accomplish.
“We learned technique and this project lasted about a month,” said Ruskey. “The writing also seemed to come easier for them when they started drawing their subject.
Subjects ranged from Barak O’Bama and Martin Luther King to Harriet Tubman and singer Nina Simone and will hang through the end of school.
