Congressman Bennie Thompson voted to fund $10,527,500 in Community Project Funding that he previously secured in Washington for eight projects in five counties in the 2nd Congressional District.
The Second Congressional District of Mississippi is approximately 275 miles long, 180 miles wide and borders the Mississippi River; it encompasses much of the Mississippi Delta, and a total of 15 counties and parts of several others. It is the only majority-black district in the state.
This funding, included in the appropriations government funding package, responds directly to some of the most pressing needs in the Mississippi Delta.
“I am incredibly pleased to vote for $10,527,500 in Community Project Funding in this bill that I know will have a profound impact on the 2nd Congressional District,” Thompson said. “These investments support underserved areas and foster economic development, making a real difference in the lives of so many in our community. I am proud to have fought for funding that will make our community healthier, safer, stronger and even more resilient.”
Congressman Thompson championed funding for eight projects that will directly benefit Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District residents. These include:
• $300,000 for Mississippi Delta Disaster Relief Shelter, Montgomery County.
• $2,250,000 for Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation Facility Revitalization, Sunflower County.
• $225,000 for Bolivar County Community Facility, Bolivar County.
• $2,250,000 for IT Montgomery Home Restoration, Bolivar County.
• $37,500 for Cary Christian Center Facility, Sharkey County.
• $1,465,000 for Rural Hinds County Utilization Project, Hinds County.
• $3,000,000 for Jackson State University Center for Living, Learning and Cultural Engagement, Hinds County.
• $1,000,000 for Tougaloo College, Tougaloo, MS for the Reuben V. Anderson Institute for Social Justice, Hinds County.
The twelve-bill government funding package will help middle class families with the cost of living, create American jobs, supports the vulnerable, and works to help small businesses and restaurants that are key to our economic future. Collectively, the funding for the 2nd Congressional District and the funding increases for critical government programs will reverse decades of disinvestment in our communities and strengthen our nation.
This legislation will be voted on by the Senate and signed into law by President Biden later this week.
