Commissioner Willie Simmons, Central Transportation District, has announced updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) maintenance projects in western Mississippi.
“These projects show your tax dollars at work,” said Simmons. “As crews work to complete these projects, motorists are reminded to slow down and be on high alert for roadside workers.”
Crews open Interstate 20 Frontage Road extension bridge in Vicksburg
Crews recently opened the new Interstate 20 frontage road extension bridge in Vicksburg. The project extends the existing south frontage road from Old Highway 27 to U.S. Highway 80.
Five I-20 bridges within the Vicksburg city limits will also receive new bridge railings and other minor repairs. With the new extension bridge open, crews will now begin the repair work on the I-20 bridges.
The $17.3 million contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc., of Columbia. Work is expected to be completed spring 2023.
Overlay and slide repair projects underway in Copiah County
In Copiah County, an overlay of approximately 15 miles of State Route 28 is underway from one mile east of Sylvarena Road to Whitworth Road, and three miles on State Route 801 from State Route 27 to the Hinds County line. The contractor has completed milling work. Paving operations are underway and work is on track to be completed this summer.
The $5.1 million contract was awarded to W.E. Blain & Sons of Morton.
An emergency project is underway that consists of repairing and stabilizing slides on Interstate 55 southbound just south of Hazlehurst at the Tower Road interchange. The $2.5 million contract was awarded to Cotton Creek Transport, Inc., of Laurel. Work is expected to wrap up this fall.
U.S. Highway 61 slide repair complete in Jefferson County
A project to repair a slide on U.S. Highway 61 southbound just north of the Adams County line in Jefferson County has been completed. The $1.4 million project was awarded to Midway Construction, Inc., of Roxie.
U.S. 61 intersection improvements underway in Washington County
Intersection improvements are underway on U.S. 61 at Griffin Road, Stoneville Road, Elizabeth Road and Old U.S. 61. The contractor has completed all roadway construction. Remaining work includes the installation of signage and ITS components.
“These intersection improvements will greatly enhance safety conditions along this stretch of U.S. 61,” said Simmons.
The $509,520 project was awarded to Webster Electric Company, Inc., of Collinsville. Work is on track to be completed by the fall.
State Route 433 overlay in Yazoo County
This lottery funded project calls for the overlay of 12 miles of State Route 433 from State Route 3 to U.S. Highway 49 in Yazoo County. Crews are working on driveway pads, and placing shoulder gravel and permanent stripe.
The $2.1 million contract was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc., of Jackson. Work is expected to be completed this spring.
State Route 438 bridge repair in Washington County
A bridge repair project on State Route 438 over Canal 9 will soon be underway. Work is expected to be completed this summer. The $465,905 contract was awarded to Gibson & Associates, Inc., of Balch Springs, Texas.
“These projects are a major investment into the state’s infrastructure,” said Simmons. “We look forward to seeing these projects through that will greatly improve safety and efficiency throughout western Mississippi.”
