Below is a press release from the Mississippi Department of Transportation:
On Thursday, March 17, the bridge on State Route 609, also known as the Fort Bayou Drawbridge, in Jackson County was designated as the “Mark M. Seymour, Sr. Memorial Bridge” in honor of the late Mark M. Seymour, Sr.
Seymour was the first City Engineer of Ocean Springs. He was instrumental in securing the funding, planning, and design for the reconstruction of the Fort Bayou Drawbridge. Seymour also served in the military for 11 years as both a 1st and 2nd Lieutenant. He passed away in March of 2010.
“The Fort Bayou Drawbridge is crucial for the City of Ocean Springs, and it’s played a major role in the city’s growth,” said Commissioner Tom King, Southern Transportation District. “I am thrilled to be able to honor the man who played such a key part in ensuring this bridge would last for years to come. I hope everyone who crosses this bridge will know that without Mark M. Seymour, Sr., it might not still be here.”
The ceremony was held at Aunt Jenny’s Catfish Restaurant in Ocean Springs. Southern Transportation Commissioner Tom King and Mayor Rusty Quave, City of D’Iberville, were among the distinguished guests who spoke at the dedication ceremony.
