It’s hardly surprising that Donald Trump and his administration would gloss over and lie about a major security blunder.
It fits the longstanding pattern of the Republican president and those with whom he prefers to surround himself.
Trump, following the disclosure that some higher-ups in his administration discussed on an unsecure messaging app an imminent U.S. military attack and inadvertently included a journalist in the conversation, dismissed it as no more than a “glitch” — even though the carelessness could have endangered the success of the mission and the lives of Americans who carried it out.
Meanwhile, some of those involved in the chat either lied to Congress and the media about what was said or had convenient memory lapses as to the content of the discussion.
Their lies and obfuscation were exposed after The Atlantic, whose editor was mistakenly invited to the chat, published on Wednesday the transcript of the discussion.
It was feared that Trump’s boot-licking choices to head up the nation’s security and defense agencies were not up to the job. They have already proven it.
