Delta State University is preparing to celebrate its 86th annual Homecoming this weekend in Cleveland.
As far as I can ascertain, Delta State is the biggest secret in the Delta!
I never see anything about the school in the state’s largest newspaper, The Clarion Ledger in Jackson, whether it be on the sports page or the news section! The last thing I remember seeing about Delta State in the Clarion Ledger was the story about the professor that was shot and killed down there and that was at least a couple of years ago.
Nothing has crossed my desk from the school in months!
Not even an E-mail!
I don’t even know what the football team’s season record is! I don’t believe I should have to ask for the information. It should be forthcoming from the school!
For the record, the Statesmen are 1-8 overall, 1-5 in the Gulf South Conference, while Mississippi College is 3-6 overall and 1-5 in GSC play.
But, be that as it may, Homecoming is this weekend at DSU and there are a number of events that you may be interested in attending, other than the football game.
For example, Friday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., there will be a reception I t he Atrium of Kent Wyatt Hall, the Administration Building adjacent to Walter Sillers Coliseum, honoring DSU Athletic Director Ronnie Mayers. This will be followed by a Golden Circle Social at the Cleveland Country Club at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Alumni Awards Gala at 7:00 p.m., also at the Cleveland Country Club.
The Golden Circle consists of DSU alumni whom have graduated from the Cleveland school at least 50 years ago! Each will be presented with Golden medallions at the Friday Gala.
Saturday morning at 9, you are invited to a Veterans Day program in Jobe Hall on campus followed by the annual Homecoming Day Parade, one of the best parades staged in the Delta each year. The parade starts on the Quadrangle after an 8:30 a.m. ribbon cutting for Statesman Blvd!
While the parade is underway, you can take a trolley tour of the Delta State campus and at noon you can make your way over to Statesman Park and begin tailgating. DSU President Bill LaForge will host his reception at the Dorgan Center during the tailgaiting period starting at 1:30 p.m. before the game between the Statesmen and Mississippi College at 2 p.m.
The matchup between the Statesmen and the Choctaws is a great one as the two schools have been natural rivals for years! The game should be a good one!
The game will of course be played on Parker Field in McCool Stadium. Parker Field is named for Red Parker, a former Delta State football coach back in the 1940’s, and the stadium is named for former DSU football Coach Horace McCool, who coached the Statesmen back in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.
Some of you may refer to the Statesmen as the Fighting Okra, a nickname which rose to prominence when it was discovered that the football field was carved from an okra crop grown by the farmer who owned the land at the time the field was created.
Whatever, the Quad will be rocking at Delta State this weekend as DSU will celebrated the school’s 96th annual Homecoming festivities when the Statesmen host the Choctaws of Mississippi College at 2 p.m. in the Homecoming football game in Cleveland.
