Coahoma County High School is on a four-game losing streak after losing the Region 3-2A opener at Madison Palmer Friday night 58-14.
Tarkevius Logan caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lamont Lee. Lee completed the 2-point conversion pass to Logan. Clintavious Davis ran for a 4-yard touchdown.
“Logan is a very bright spot,” said CCHS coach Mario Lane. “Talented young man. I wish he had been playing a lot sooner, but he’s doing well for us this year.”
The two scores were the only production for the Red Panthers (1-5, 0-1).
“We didn’t do a thing on defense,” Lane said. “They didn’t punt all night.”
CCHS started off slow in 2018, but won their last two regular season games to make the playoffs. That is something Lane is not letting his team forget.
“We still have a chance,” Lane said. “I think Palmer is one of the better teams in the district. We’re still struggling. We can’t get any consistency on our line play. We’re starting five new (offensive) linemen every Friday. We’re starting four new defensive linemen every Friday, so we’re just struggling to get guys on the field. Numbers are low. Kids are quitting.”
CCHS hosts O’Bannon at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Former CCHS principal Lynn Lang is in his first season as the O’Bannon coach.
“It’s a friendly rivalry,” Lane said. “He and I, we’ve coached together before. I coached against him before. We’re going to come out and do our best. We need something for us to happen. They’ve been struggling like we are, so it’ll be a dog fight.”
Lane hopes knowing how Lang coaches benefits the Red Panthers Thursday.
“Hopefully, I can use it to my advantage,” Lane said. “I think I know a bit more about him than he does about me. They look like they’re coming around on film. He’s got a young team as well, so right now, he’s just in the beginning stages teaching the young guys football.”
A win could mean a spot in the playoffs for either team.
“It has playoff implications because I think in this lower tier of the district – us, O’Bannon and Leland – I think we’ll be fighting for that last playoff spot,” Lane said.
