Coahoma County High School is yet to put its first points on the board during the 2019 season after being shut out 30-0 at West Bolivar Friday night.
“We tried to throw more,” said Red Panthers coach Mario Lane. “We couldn’t run it. We were hurting on the offensive line. The line got hurt. That depth on the trenches killed us tonight.”
Junior Lamont Lee is in his third season as the starting quarterback, while Markevious Holmes was the top receiver for Coahoma County in the loss.
The Red Panthers travel to West Tallahatchie at 7 p.m. Friday for another non-district game.
Lane was not discouraged following the loss.
“It’s the first game,” he said. “We just come in Monday. We’re going to do some things different, move some people around. We have film to look at, see how people played at each position and we’ll try to get different look. We’ll be OK. It’s just the first game. We played a lot of new guys that never played football before. It’s just growing pains.”
Lane said he would mostly be shifting athletes around, not benching anyone.
He was pleased with the effort he saw in the opener.
“We got tired at the end,” Lane said. “We were kind of thin. We don’t have a lot of depth, but I saw some bright spots. We started out well. Defensively, we played good at the beginning. We gave up a couple of big plays more so than anything, so we’ve got some stuff to work with.”
