David Huggins of Clarksdale has been awarded the 2018 Robbie Webb Junior Golf Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions Junior Golf in Mississippi. He joins Hal Graves of Meadville as recipients of the achievement award, according to a press release from the Mississippi Golf Association.
Both men began assisting in hosting a local Mississippi qualifier with the Independent Agents Junior Class, later known as the Trusted Choice Big 1 National Championship.
The award is named in honor of Robbie Webb, a golf professional in Canton, MS, for persons in Mississippi who have made outstanding contributions to Junior Golf in Mississippi.
When David and Hal first started, they held eight or nine local qualifiers to a state tournament where they would advance the winners to the National Tournament.
A girl’s division was first started in 1993 and starting in 2004 they partnered with the Mississippi Junior Golf Association to sanction the event.
With David’s involvement on the National Committee and Hal’s role as State Chairman and chaperone each played a vital role in giving Mississippi juniors the opportunity to advance in their golf career and allow for national level experience. They witnessed many who advanced further on the PGA and LPGA Tours: Tiger Woods, Justin Leonard, David Duval, Jonathan Byrd, Cheyenne Woods, Morgan Pressel, Christie Kerr and Mississippi’s own Ally McDonald, of Fulton, who won the 2011 National Championship of Reunion Golf & Country Club in Madison, MS.
