In Saturday’s Delta Valley Conference meet, the Coahoma County High School girls’ track and field team took home the trophy and the boys’ team placed 4th. “I was a little unsure about this meet, because I knew I was going in without a couple of my fastest runners,” says coach Derrick Moore.
Coahoma County’s Shuniia Wrenn won the long jump, while teammate Ashley Spearman came in third. Wrenn, this time on the track, placed first in the second heat of the 100m dash. The girls’ 4x200 meter relay team (Nakia Cheatham, Treashunn Clark, Shanteria Evans and Siara Hardine) finished third, and the girls’ 4x400 meter relay team finished second to Leland. Cheatham also placed first in the 100 and 400 meter dashes and second in the 200 meter dash. Coming in fourth place alongside Cheatham in the same heat of the 100 meter dash was Shanteria Evans. In shot put, Toni Peterson came in third place and Tajah Williams in fifth. In the 400 meter dash, Alexis Wade placed third, Hardine fourth, and Ladarius Porter (boys) fifth. Latreavius Cannon placed third in the first heat of the 100 meter dash. The 4x100 boys’ meter relay team placed fourth and the 4x200 meter relay team placed third.
In the 200 meter run, Cheatham placed second, Evans fifth, and Logan (boys) third, and in the 800 meter run, Alexis Wade placed third and Takyia Davis fifth. In the 100 meter hurdles, Treashunn Clark came in first and Shakira Artis in third. Placing in the 300 meter hurdles: Ashley Spearman (first), Kaneisha Jackson (second), and Fierra Thomas (fourth).
When asked about his expectations of younger and upcoming athletes, Coach Moore had this to say: “Toni went to state last year as an eighth grader. So I’m excited to see her do well this season and hopefully go back again. Nakia has been a state champ in the 400- several years. So she’s confident and expects to handle business this year as well. Shaniia does well in long jump and the 100 m dash. This is her first time running with us. Last year, she and Wrenn competed against one another, and this year they’re a ‘neck and neck’ steal in long jump,” says Moore.
Both Coahoma County teams are looking to show up in a big way for their district meet to be held on April 10 at Mississippi Valley State University.
