Senior attacking midfielder Liz Basha scored two goals for Lee Academy in a 4-2 division loss at Kirk Academy Monday.
It was the first division loss of the soccer season for the Fillies (1-1, 1-2), but they were ahead 2-1 with 30 minutes remaining in the second half. One of Basha’s goals came on a penalty kick and the other was on a regular play.
“We got tired,” said Lee coach Joseph Natalizio. “We know what we need to work on. We have a decent shot when they come play us here.”
Goalie Merri Evelyn Evans had approximately four saves.
Natalizio said Evans handled the ball well and Kirk did not have any rebounds on missed shots.
“Kirk is very quick, especially up front,” Natalizio said. “She came offline and made a few saves for us.”
Injuries cost Lee.
“We still have a full team, but five of our starters either joined us late last season or didn’t play last season,” Natalizio said.
“Having players go down and having a relatively small team is tough.”
Lee lost a non-division game at home against Bayou Academy 8-0 Wednesday, Aug. 5.
“Bayou is a good team,” Natalizio said.” It wouldn’t surprise me if they completed for the state title in their division.”
Lee only had a few shots on goal, while Evans had around five saves.
“She played very well despite the score line,” Natalizio said. “She was fearless coming off her line. It would have been a lot worse if she wasn’t as good as she was.”
Lee hosts Washington School Monday and Magnolia Heights School Wednesday, Aug. 19. Both games start at 4:30 p.m.
