Below is a press release from the Mississippi Department of Transportation:
Mississippi Department of Transportation volunteers turned out in big numbers to pick up trash for the MDOT and Keep Mississippi Beautiful annual Jackson Trash Bash 2022. This year they picked up litter along State Route 25 in Rankin County.
“We have about 100 employees that come out and this is part of the Great American Cleanup and Keep Mississippi Beautiful because we’re big partners with them.“ - Lorrie Redden, MDOT Litter Program Specialist
“Helping pick up trash is a good way to get out of the office, do a little handy work and get a few steps in.“ - Steadman Capler, MDOT Auditor
Trash Bash has been putting a dent in litter since 1989, and is MDOT’s longest running event.
“We spend over 3 million dollars on trash with people just throwing it out of their cars. We want to encourage everybody when you’re at a gas station or you’re at home to go ahead right then and empty your car. So many people just roll down the window and throw it out.“ - Lorrie Redden
Trash Bash not only serves as a way to bring public attention to the negative impact trash has on our roadways, but it allows MDOT employees to dedicate a day of service to keeping our state clean.
“Gotta keep Mississippi Beautiful, I ain’t your momma.” - Steadman Capler
This year volunteers picked up enough litter to fill 181 trash bags, from highly visible areas along the highway.
