We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our beloved friend and former Citizen of the Year, Mrs. Lela Keys, this past Sunday morning. Mrs. Keys was a remarkable force for good—an elegant blend of strength, compassion, and service whose presence left an indelible mark on our community.
There are few corners of our town that have not been touched by her kindness, leadership, and tireless spirit. Guided by a servant’s heart, Mrs. Keys gave freely of her time and talents to make life better for others. She served faithfully on the Board of Trustees of Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center and the Board of the Industrial Foundation, following a proud twenty-year career at the hospital she loved. She also lent her wisdom and care to the Board of Directors of the Aaron E. Henry Medical Center and participated in countless Chamber of Commerce committees and community volunteer efforts.
Some people pass through life content to receive its blessings. Mrs. Keys spent her life determined to share them. She sought out opportunities to lift others up, to heal, to build, and to inspire—all with extraordinary grace and humility.
While our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort and gratitude in the memory of her friendship, her laughter, and the extraordinary legacy of love she leaves behind. Our community is better, kinder, and stronger because of Mrs. Lela Keys—and she will be profoundly missed.
