The Memphis National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Severe Weather Advisory for southwest portions of the Mid-South and the Coahoma County Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) has pointed out that includes Coahoma County.
An Enhanced Risk for severe weather is forecast for the far southwest portions of the Mid-South, while a Slight Risk covers much of the remaining area. That forecast includes strong wind and rain that will be heavy at times.
“The southern portion of Coahoma County is at an Enhanced Risk of severe thunderstorms and the northern portion of the county is at a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms,” the NWS said in a statement. “A Slight Risk for excessive rainfall is expected across the southern half of the region, with a Marginal Risk for the northern half.
NWS said the wind advisory will continue through 6 p.m. Wednesday and the severe weather is expected to move in at about 1 p.m. Tuesday and continue until 4 p.m. today.
“The storm will be moving west to east across Coahoma County and the Mid-South region,” said Coahoma EMA Director Charles Hale. “Primary threats include damaging winds that may bring down trees and power lines, potentially causing property damage to vehicles and structures.
Hales said tornadoes could develop from this weather as could hail.
NWS has predicted rainfall of up to 1.5 inches in Coahoma County and sustained winds of 25-miles per hour with gusts 40 to 50 miles-per-hour. NWS said this weather has been spawned by a potent upper-level low that is moving across most of the central part of the United States.
“The Coahoma County Emergency Management Agency will continue to monitor the Severe Weather Probabilities and provide updates as needed,” said Hale. “We urge residents to remain vigilant, monitor local weather updates, and take necessary precautions to stay safe. As always, our priority is the safety and well-being of our community, and we will continue to provide timely updates as the situation evolves.
The community is urged to call 911 immediately if they spot a tornado. Power outages should be reported to your electric power provider.
Resident should contact Coahoma EMA at 662-624-3041 to report damage to property. Reporting and documenting property damage is critical to obtaining disaster assistance and for private property insurance reports.
