The Tunica Academy boys and girls basketball teams both lost in the first round of the MSAIS state tournaments.
The girls lost 62-31.
“We were outmatched but I was extremely proud of the girls for battling for 32 minutes,” said coach Jeff Dalton.
Sophie Dalton, Sarah Goff and Taylor Sexton each had eight points.
“I'm really happy for the success the girls had this season,” Coach Dalton said. “They won the district championship for the first time in many years and continued to get better as the season progressed. It was one of the most enjoyable seasons I have had coaching a team.”
The boys lost to Collegiate Christian 68-37.
Almonzo Payne Jr. led the way with 16 points and Braxton Acey had eight.
“I told the boys that one of the biggest challenges a coach faces is trying to get their team to peak at the right time,” Coach Dalton said. “I didn't get it figured out this year and unfortunately our best basketball was played from mid-December until the end of January.
“For reasons I can't explain we just struggled to score the last couple of weeks and didn't play with the same enthusiasm we did during the mid part of our schedule.
“I'm still happy for the boys for winning the district championship for the first time in a long time and winning 22 games.”
