Clarksdale Police have responded to a series of three shootings over the weekend with one at a highway business and two more at homes in the community.
The incidents saw multiple shots fired but only one person injured by gunfire. Police did not say if the incidents were connected.
Police were called to a Saturday afternoon shooting on Old Highway 61 North and were told a man had been shot in the 600 block of Evelyn Street.
Police reports said when officers arrived at about 1:50 p.m. a male subject had been transported to the Clarksdale Hospital Emergency Room just blocks away.
Police did not give the name of the victim, a possible motive for the shooting or a description of those involved. Police said numerous shell casings were collected at the scene. Police also did not say how many weapons might have been involved.
The incident allegedly has a suspect or suspects at a local convenience store in the area about the time of the shooting and portions of the incident were captured on store video and customer cellphones.
Police also responded to two shootings of homes and vehicles and multiple shots-fired reports over the weekend.
Police were called to the 800 block of Spruce Street regarding the shooting of a vehicle and possible aggravated assault.
Police reports said the driver of the vehicle was leaving his residence when someone fired several shots into his vehicle.
No one was reported injured in the incident.
Police were also called to the 800 block of Pecan Street on a similar incident.
The homeowner said she heard numerous shots as she was sitting in her living room. She said one shot struck her front door and one shot struck her vehicle parked in front of the residence.
A witness to the shooting said he saw a male subject shooting at another male subject as they were walking down the street near the crime scene.
No one was injured in this incident.
All three shootings are under investigation. Police are asking the community to call them immediately if they hear gunfire to allow them to converge on the area.
Police said they also investigated calls of shots fired at the following locations over the weekend.
• 500 block of Page Street
• 800 block of Spruce Street
• Area of Maple and Smith Streets
Firing shots inside the city limits of Clarksdale is a misdemeanor, but can be enhanced to a felony if the person shooting has a previous conviction for certain crimes or the shots were premeditated with intent to cause hate, harm or fear.
If any person shoots a firearm of any nature or description into any house or any other building usually occupied by persons, whether actually occupied or not, they can bel be guilty of a felony whether or not anybody is injured.
Upon conviction they can be punished by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for a term not to exceed ten years, or by imprisonment in the county jail, fined up to $5,000, forced to pay restitution for damages, all within the discretion of the court.
