A woman walking on a highway in Tunica was hit by a vehicle Sunday evening and died from injuries sustained in the accident later that night in a Memphis hospital.
Local authorities are urging pedestrians to walk at least six feet off the highway in the right-of-way and motorist are urged to give those walking or riding a bicycle some distance to avoid an accident. Pedestrians are also urged to wear light clothing if they are walking on public roadways after dark.
The Tunica accident occurred about 8:34 p.m. Saturday, April 2, on Ole Highway 61 near the Sears Subdivision. The call was phoned in to 911 in Tunica County who promptly dispatched first responders and deputies.
Upon arrival, the female pedestrian was located with serious injuries and was transported to Regional I Medical Center in Memphis, She was later identified as 32-year-old Chasity Partridge, of Horn Lake. She was pronounced deceased at 9:52 p.m. at the Med in Memphis.
The Tunica County Sheriff’s Department said the driver of the vehicle that struck Partridge has been identified as Kelvin Dawson, 35, of Tunica. Dawson is being held at the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office pending the investigation.
In Mississippi a motor vehicle accident involving a fatality requires a blood alcohol content test within a set amount of time following the accident.
The Tunica County Sheriff’s Department said the incident remains under investigation and anyone with information about the accident or details about the incident is asked to call the CrimeStoppers at 662-910-0004 or TCSO at 662-363-1411.
