With a 7-2 record for the season, the Lady Wildcats softball team continues to develop as the season progresses. Clarksdale split Tuesday’s double header 1-1 against Yazoo City, starting off strong (obtaining most of their runs due to advancements from stolen bases) and winning the first game 10-8; then losing the second 16-8. Yazoo City, standing as the two-time defending district champions, served as the ideal opponents for the Wildcats as they came in third in the district last year -- the first time in ten years making it to the playoffs. “I believe my girls as a whole and also my pitchers were just tired after the first game,” says head coach Westley Davis “They couldn’t make the adjustments to pull off the second game playing as aggressively as in the first.”
Freshman, Alexis Moore and junior, Jimara Clay, were Tuesday’s offensive key players and defensively, catcher, Princess McCray (all showing strong leadership).
A former Coahoma Early College High School baseball player, Westley Davis has high expectations for the young team to mature them, motivate them and serve as a role model for his girls as well. “I often remind them to stay prayerful and to present themselves with integrity both on and off the field. In order to back that up, I must model it as well,” states Davis.
When asked what areas the team plans to improve in, Davis listed: becoming more consistent in batting, defense and pitching.
He also added their primary goal for the season is to further their placement in the playoffs.
