Hayes Clegg, who started his senior football season at Lee Academy, as a running back and linebacker, has been named to the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) All Star team.
“They didn’t assign him a position,” said Lee Academy Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Rick Johnston. “But I would say he was Most Valuable Player. I’d say no player was more valuable to his team than Hayes was to ours.”
Clegg filled in a quarterback for the Colts when they lost their third signal caller of the season to injury. Junior Brett Wilson started the season as the quarterback for the Colts before injuring his ankle. Senior Evan Watts was then called on to call the signals for Lee but suffered a knee injury that required surgery. Sophomore Luke Crumpton then got the call but separated his shoulder against Macon Road Baptist School in the season’s seventh game.
Clegg had served as the backup quarterback when each quarterback succumbed to injury during games.
“He performed very well, making solid decisions under fire,” Johnston said. “I am very proud of him.”
He carried the ball 118 times for 454 yards and rushed for four touchdowns in four games. He also completed 15 of 35 passes for 324 yards and four touchdowns. He was intercepted four times.
Clegg will play for the North team in the annual MAIS football all-star game, which is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff Nov. 30 at Jackson Prep.
