Shelton Johnson, a senior at Lee Academy and no stranger to the community, is an all-around athlete and student whose dedication and diligence has been shown on many platforms.
Each season, she is definitely occupied and active as she plays softball, basketball and runs track. “Of the three, I’d have to say it’s a tie between softball and basketball as my favorite,” Johnson said.
Undoubtedly one of Lee Academy’s fastest sprinters on the girls track team, Shelton competes in the following events: 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams. “I enjoy running the 4 x 100 best. The distance is shorter,” Johnson jokes.
When asked about his expectations and opinion of Shelton’s athletic career, head track and field coach Chad Foster, had this to say: “Over the years, she has developed and gotten faster by working harder on the track during practice and just really taking it seriously. I’m looking forward to her finishing her career here with hopefully helping the girls relay team get qualified for state. She’s among the core group that has gone years prior.”
A member of the National Honor Society and with a 4.0 GPA, Shelton has been awarded Mu Alpha Theta, Best on Track, Best Sprinter, Philly and Most Improved (softball). She has decided to not pursue a collegiate sports career as she plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall. “I have made some of my best friends and memories through sports and here at Lee,” says Johnson.
